The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) is the sole governing body that regulates all cadres of nurses and midwives in Nigeria. It was established by government decree in 1979, and reestablished as a parastatal by the government of Nigeria by Act Cap. No 143 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
It is the only legal, administrative, corporate and statutory body charged with the performance of specific functions on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the delivery of safe and effective Nursing and Midwifery care to the public through quality education and best practices.

The nursing and midwifery council approves Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, Post Basic Nursing, and Departments of Nursing and regulates their Accreditation Status and Admission Quota on State Basis.
Presently there are Two Hundred and Ninety (400) Nursing Training Institutions in Nigeria.
